UK Healthcare Research

The problem
1 in 4 people don’t get the care and support they need. And the problem is growing, fast. People in the UK are living longer, with multiple and more complex health challenges. By 2048, the need for end of life care will have increased by up to 25%. And the people who miss out most are those from disadvantaged and marginalised communities.

Our vision
Everyone will be affected by dying, death and bereavement. That can’t be changed; but the end of life experience can. Everyone deserves the best possible care and support, reflecting what’s most important to them. We want a better end of life for all.

Our mission
Over the next five years and beyond, our mission is to close the gap in end of life care. Between now and 2028 we’ll design and deliver services providing the best possible care and support to people living with any terminal illness, and those close to them.

And we’ll play a leading role in shaping the end of life system across the UK; driving research, influencing public policy, campaigning for change, and fighting for better services – so everyone has access to the end of life care and support they need.

Stobhill Hospital Glasgow, home of Marie Curie Hospice

Stobhill Hospital is located in Springburn in the north of Glasgow, Scotland. It serves the population of North Glasgow and part of East Dunbartonshire. It is managed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Stobhill was originally a Poor Law hospital, commissioned by the Glasgow Parish Council. The design competition, which was judged by John James Burnet, was won by Glasgow architects, Thomson & Sandilands.

The foundation stone was laid in September 1901 by Lord Balfour of Burleigh, the then Secretary of State for Scotland, and Stobhill Hospital was formally opened on 15 September 1904, the same day as the Western District Hospital at Oakbank in Maryhill and the Eastern District Hospital at Duke Street. The original buildings are now graded as category B listed buildings.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is the largest NHS organisation in Scotland. It is also one of the largest in the UK.

NHSGGC is responsible for providing and managing a whole range of health services including hospitals and General Practice. NHSGGC works alongside partnership organisations including Local Authorities and the voluntary sector.
