Van Alen Institute New York

Gareth Hoskins Architects is currently featuring as part of ‘THE GOOD LIFE: Design For All’ exhibition in New York, organised by the Van Alen Institute.

GHA is the only Scottish practice that has been invited to exhibit work for this major exhibition, alongside an international selection of architectural and design practices including Dutch practice West 8, USA based Martha Schwartz, and from London Thomas Heatherwick, Adjaye Associates and MacCormac Jamieson Prichard Architects.

The exhibition showcases the importance of good design in public recreational spaces to improve the quality of life within cities. Also highlighted, is how existing public spaces can be reinvented and industrial and urban sites transformed into spaces for play and cultural exchange. Mindful of the range of uses that recreational spaces allow for, such as relaxing, exercising and socialising, ‘THE GOOD LIFE: The Design For All’ exhibition also demonstrates how the best and most sustainable public spaces are flexible, adapting to future needs and accommodating changing, multiple activities that can appeal to a wide and diverse variety of people.

Van Alen Institute Exhibition – New York : 7 Sep – 1 Oct 2006

Van Alen Institute is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving design in the public realm through a program of exhibitions, competitions, publications, lectures, and forums. Founded in 1894 as the Society Beaux-Arts the Institute was renamed in 1996 after William Van Alen, the architect of the Chrysler Building and the Institute’s largest benefactor, and reorganised to focus on the public realm. Based in New York, the Institute’s projects initiate interdisciplinary collaborations between practitioners, policymakers, students, educators and community leaders.

Gareth Hoskins Architects are one of the leading architecture and design practices in the UK. The practice’s innovative and people focused designs have resulted in a wide range of prominent projects both throughout the UK and abroad. The imaginative and responsive buildings, environments and designs that result from the practice’s approach have been widely recognised through major press coverage and a string of national exhibitions and awards.
