Major Residential Development
Carvill (Scotland) Ltd have submitted a detailed planning application
for the comprehensive redevelopment of the former Allied Distillery site
in Dumbarton Town Centre. Designed by Cooper Cromar Architects, in conjunction
with Llewellyn Davies Planning Consultants and Landscape Architects, the
scheme comprises 291 residential properties and a 40 unit retirement housing
development.

In conjunction with the proposed commercial development which is planned
for the remainder of the site by Vico Properties, the proposal seeks to
revitalise this important area and fully integrate with the existing urban
fabric of the historic town of Dumbarton.

The site is located immediately adjacent to the River Leven, and offers
dramatic views of both Dumbarton Rock and the Clyde Estuary. A link to
the historical heritage of the site has been maintained through the retention
of the landmark Mill and Stills building, which will be redeveloped to
create 61 residential units over 14 levels, with commercial space at ground
floor level. A new public town square which links to the riverside will
also be created as well as smaller more intimate public spaces which fully
link the development into the nearby town centre. The existing riverside
walkway will be extended along the full perimeter of the site, including
the basin adjacent to the Denny Tank Museum and ultimately linking the
site to Dumbarton Rock.
Courtyards to the rear of the properties provide dedicated car parking
and raised decks at first floor level, provide private amenity space for
the residents. The project will be designed to meet the obligations of
the EcoHomes charter, which seeks to balance environmental performance
with the need for a high quality of life and a safe and healthy internal
environment. In addition, the scheme further aims to consolidate its sustainable
credentials through the provision of restricted on-site car parking -
at a level of 80% across the development - to promote the use of public
and alternative transportation methods.
