Molendinar Park Extension - Masterplan, Gallowgate
2007-08 Richard Murphy Architects
Following the Graeme Square development for Molendinar Park Housing Association, Page & Park, McKeown Alexander - now JM Architects - Richard Murphy Architects and Elder & Canon Architects were asked to compete for the master planning of an adjacent site on the corner of Melbourne Street and the Gallowgate in Glasgow’s East End.
The site includes a derelict tenement on the Gallowgate due to be demolished and the preserved archway to the former meat market. Each Architect is due to design around 20 to 25 flats.
The Molendinar Park competition for the Melbourne Street master plan was won by Richard Murphy Architects in early 2003. The master plan proposes a large communal pedestrian square in the centre of the site. Each Architect was invited to design a housing scheme around a courtyard.
Since the Molendinar Park Housing Association master plan was proposed each Architect has developed their own scheme to suit and the combined planning application is due to be submitted in Spring 2005. The Melbourne Street project is due for completion in 2006 on a phased completion across the whole site.
