Sustainability forms a primary driver of the brief for the new College and passive techniques, to incorporate natural daylight and ventilation to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, have informed the design of spaces throughout the building. The building also makes use of night cooling by using the exposed oncrete soffits to enhance thermal comfort.

A variety of renewable technologies have been incorporated into the design, including a 600kW biomass boiler and 330sqm of photovoltaic panels, to provide low carbon heating, domestic hot water and electricity, along with heat pumps which supply a high efficiency cooling system.

Keppie Divisional Director Ryan Sylvester, who also led the original design proposals with RMJM, says:
“This is a fantastic achievement for our team and is of strategic importance not just to Keppie but to the wider learning community in Scotland. There are only a few examples in Scotland of educational buildings which have achieved BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ and securing this rating for the Kilmarnock Campus at design stage, is testament to the dedication and determination of the whole Keppie team.”
