There are 19 universities in Scotland, so to make it easier to decide where to study architecture, here are the ones we think are best:

Edinburgh University

The UK’s second most popular university in terms of applications, Edinburgh provides rich access to architecture. In fact, it has the most architecture courses in Scotland, with six paths to choose from depending on any specializations you want to add:

  • Structural Engineering with Architecture MEng (Hons)
  • Architectural History and Heritage MA (Hons)
  • Architectural History and Archeology MA (Hons)

Glasgow University

With the fourth strictest entry requirements in the UK, it is an honour to study architecture at the ancient Glasgow University. Instead of a broad range of options, the university focuses on just two architecture courses focused on combining with civil engineering:

  • Civil Engineering with Architecture BEng (Hons)
  • Civil Engineering with Architecture MEng (Hons)

University of Strathclyde

Despite having just a single architecture course, Strathclyde in Glasgow is an excellent choice because it is dedicated to technological and design studies. As the UK’s first tech-focused university, Strathclyde has won University of the Year twice by Times Higher Education:

  • Architectural Studies BSc (Hons)

University of Dundee

The University of Dundee is the only school outside of Glasgow or Edinburgh where you can choose between multiple architecture course, with two available. The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design is an excellent place to learn architecture on one of the following courses:

  • Architecture BA
  • Interior & Environmental Design BDes (Hons)

Robert Gordon University

Located in Aberdeen, Robert Gordon offers two architecture courses and is one of the youngest universities in Scotland:

  • Architecture March
  • Architectural Technology BSc (Hons)


Above are the top five universities for studying architecture in Scotland, but it is worth noting there are also several other institutions with their own architecture degree and master programs.

When studying for an architecture degree, it can take between three and seven years depending on your study schedule. This includes five years of study for the degree, and then a further two years of work experience. Final exams to pass the qualification happen after the work experience. Graduating with a degree in architecture opens numerous possibilities, including working for yourself or as part of a company.
