Tips to Ensure Safe Crane Operation

30 January 2022

Cranes are essential equipment in the construction industry. Lifting materials, especially in high places, makes it more convenient than workers lifting them manually. But, like any other machine, there are also risks in using cranes, so there are various safety measures you need to consider. This is to prevent accidents both on humans and properties. For example, people were injured due to objects falling from the cranes and the equipment collapsing. Below are some safety tips to keep in mind when using cranes.

Tips to Ensure Safe Crane Operation

Tips to Ensure Safe Crane Operation for Lifting Materials

Only a trained or experienced operator should operate the crane

Just because someone knows how to drive a vehicle means they can operate a crane. It needs specific skills to run one. You can move the crane horizontally and vertically, while others allow 360 degrees rotation. You must be trained to safely use it as you have to consider various things, such as moving the crane without hitting anything and safely handling the materials.

Use the right crane for the job

There are different types of cranes available like the ones offered at PM Cranes. They have various features that make them appropriate for specific tasks and terrains. Below are some of the common crane types and their use.

  • Rough terrain cranes are made for rough roads or terrains but are not suitable for public roads.
  • Crawler cranes have rubber tracks making them the best for soft grounds.
  • Carry deck cranes are portable and easy to assemble, making them convenient to move around and use for smaller areas.
  • Tower cranes have a tower that holds the cab where the operator sits and the crane. It’s appropriate for high buildings or structures.
  • Other cranes have a hook on their end, but bulk handling cranes have a mechanism for carrying more oversized loads.

Survey and prepare the worksite

Before starting the operation, check the worksite thoroughly to remove obstacles the crane may hit. The operator must also be present to familiarize themselves with the area to manoeuvre the equipment safely. Electric cables are common obstacles in construction sites. Move cables if possible to clear the area.

Have a trained person to work with the operator for signalling

Another person must also be there to work with the crane operator. There should be proper communication between them. That person would signal and guide the operator to ensure a safe operation. Adequate training is also a must for this job.

Check the cranes before and after use

Another essential safety measure that you should not skip is to check your cranes before and after work. It’s not just for cranes but all other machines and tools. You could see right away if something needs repair before it causes problems or accidents.

Read the user’s manual carefully

Even if the operator is experienced in operating cranes, they should still read the user’s manual as the features, functions, and specifications vary slightly. Also, be sure not to go over the specified load limit.

Keep these safety tips in mind when operating cranes on the worksite. You will avoid accidents that may damage properties or hurt people.
