Tron Theatre

The Tron started as a church back in the early 16th century and was redeveloped
in 1999 at a cost of £5m. Much of the exterior was retained with
subtle postmodern reworking. The interior - specifically the foyer - was
much photographed for the architectural press and was one of Paul Stallan's
springboard projects for the newly formed RMJM Glasgow group. The body
of the church - or kirk - became the new auditorium. Located just west
of Glasgow Cross the theatre is in the heart of the burgeoning Merchant
City.
The Tron Theatre was established as a theatre club in 1979 (going fully
public in 1989), rising from the ashes of the destroyed Close Theatre,
based at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow

RMJM was responsible for a feasibility study to
develop the theatre and site, followed by a
programme of repairs to the external fabric of the
Grade A listed James Adam building and a
successful application for lottery funding.
The recently completed redevelopment
rationalises the existing building and spaces
comprising foyer with exhibition space, box office,
cafe and auditorium and has allowed the
development of new activities, including the studio
theatre and new administration spaces which
further enhance and develop the role of the
theatre.
