Developers aim to upgrade St Enoch Square, making it a more attractive entertainment venue with restaurants, cafes and bars. The south end would become an events space with a large screen showing sports, music and other attractions. The plans, submitted to Glasgow City Council, include lighting to improve the centre's visual appeal and create a safer environment.
The plan was unveiled by joint owners The Mills and Ivanhoe Cambridge: it would expand the centre from 750,000 sq ft to 1.3m sq ft, making it one of the largest city-centre shopping and leisure centres in the UK. Construction is scheduled to begin later in 2006 with completion at the end of 2009

St Enoch Shopping Centre - Building PR from Reiach and Hall Architects
Reiach and Hall were architects with GMW Partnership for this innovative shopping centre containing 75 unit shops, two major space users, a food court, ice rink, merchandising area and parking for 750 cars. The building uses a solar-passive approach which enables the enclosed volume to act as a buffer between the conditioned environment of the shops and the outside, while also providing an open and airy interior.

The St. Enoch Centre, known locally as the largest glass structure in Europe - but surely not as colossal as say Leipzig's Hall by Von Gerkan + Marg with Ian Ritchie Architects - over 80 mostly high street stores such as Burton, Debenhams, Boots, BhS and Oasis.

St. Enoch Shopping Centre: Background:

St Enoch Hotel opened in 1879 and became the largest hotel in Glasgow. The St Enoch Hotel was built over the railway station entrance; it closed in 1974.

Glasgow & South Western Railway Company used St Enoch Station from 1876 until the early Seventies.

St Enoch Square dates from 1783 and is currently (2004) rather down at heel and includes a Metro station dating from 1896. This area, at the ‘bottom’ of Buchanan Street, between the Clyde [link] and Argyle Street, is due for renewal. See the adjacent Custom House Quay [link] site.

The St Enoch Shopping Centre was built on the site of the station and hotel in 1985. St Enoch Church on the south side of the square was demolished in 1925.
