How about one that can be rolled up, put in the back of a truck and moved elsewhere? What about hi-tech mobile street benches? Or 3D electronic community noticeboards? Those are the ideas put forward in 'Community Green' - a project designed to come up with new ideas about how a 21st century village green could create stronger links between people living in Pollokshields on Glasgow's southside. Four teams of artists, designers and technology experts will explain their proposals to Pollokshields residents in an exhibition starting at 12 noon on Saturday 8 July. 'Community Green' was organised by New Media Scotland, SUST: The Lighthouse on Sustainability and Pollokshields-based environmental and creative arts project Radius Glasgow. Hannah Clinch of Radius said: “Pollokshields is a really vibrant place with lots of activities going on all over the place. The idea of 'Community Green' is to come up with ideas that everyone in the community can be involved in; something that will strengthen the community and make it more sustainable.” An initial ideas competition for 'Community Green' attracted interest from all over the UK. Practitioners packed a meeting at the Radius office in the heart of Pollokshields and had a fact-finding chat with local people. They then formed themselves into teams and went away to develop their ideas with the help of the community, using strategies as diverse as giant video projections, impromptu bench making workshops on street corners, seed giveaways and many tea and cake sessions. Ten ideas came back and were whittled down to four by a panel involving local people. The idea of bringing together practitioners from different disciplines was central to the project. Rob Mitchell - Programmes Developer for New Media Scotland and a Pollokshields resident - said: “Communities contain such a mixture of people: ideas to bring them closer together seem much more likely to come from unexpected combinations of expertise working in close consultation with the residents and business, rather than with a remote 'master planner'. “This lively exhibition demonstrates its contributors' expertise and willingness to inspire and be inspired by the fascinatingly-varied people of Pollokshields.” Hannah said: “What we have now is a store of ideas that people in Pollokshields can look at and think about. Representatives from all four teams will be available for interview at the launch of the exhibition.
