Following Edinburgh's win in the battle for Harvey Nichols, Glasgow has counter-attacked by attracting one of the world's best-selling fashion designers. Ralph Lauren is opening his first Scottish store, in the Merchant City area, this autumn.

City Halls Merchant City
£8m City Halls project in Glasgow Merchant City gained approval at Glasgow Council's cultural and leisure services committee.The City Halls will become the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBCSSO) base, the Scottish Music Information Centre and Glasgow home for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, due to finish by autumn 2004. The next-door Fruitmarket will be renovated as a break-out space for the project. Nov 02

Merchant City Housing
Glasgow City Council approved a 71-apartment scheme - including shops, bar, restaurant - in the Merchant City by Bett Homes, around a three-storey block which includes Bacchus pub and Bennett's nightclub. The project retains the listed facade at the corner of Ingram Street & Hutcheson Street. The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland have objected.

Selfridges by Toyo Ito are reported to have had exclusive talks with the property developer Wilson Bowden in mid-2004 about resurrecting plans to build a large store in the Merchant City, Glasgow
