RESTORED CASTLEMILK STABLES BLOCK WINS TOP ARCHITECTURE AWARD

The Glasgow Institute of Architects Supreme Award 2007 has been awarded to Castlemilk Stables Block, Glasgow, designed by Elder & Cannon Architects. The award was presented at the GIA Annual Dinner on Friday 16 November at Òran Mór, Glasgow.

The latest of Castlemilk’s regeneration projects is a beautiful and imaginative restoration of the historic ‘B’ listed Castlemilk House Stables Block, originally designed in 1790. Externally much of the original building has been restored to resemble its original appearance but internally the architects have used an exciting and elegant contemporary design.

Gerry Grams, City Design Advisor, Glasgow City Council, who was one of the judges, said: “In the company of extremely stiff competition there was one building whose regenerative impact, innovative design and elegance of detailing stood out for the judges, who found the environment created by the project a hugely uplifting experience….an outstanding achievement in every respect”.

The project also won a GIA Award in the Conservation category. Overall, forty-six projects from across the UK, designed by architects from the Glasgow Institute of Architects, were submitted. GIA President, David Dunbar said: “The quality of projects submitted was extremely high and the judges had a difficult time making the final selection. In the end, we gave awards and commendations to the buildings which, in our eyes, ticked all the boxes in terms of innovation, detail and exciting design”.
