Bridgeton Development by Austin-Smith:Lord

AUSTIN-SMITH:LORD CELEBRATE OPENING OF TULLIS STREET MEMORIAL GARDEN

4 Nov 2009

This month's opening of the new Tullis Street Memorial Garden in Bridgeton, designed by the landscape architecture team from leading designers Austin-Smith:Lord, is the first completed project delivered by Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company.

Austin-Smith:Lord was commissioned by Clyde Gateway to implement the design for the transformation of the historic but neglected piece of ground in Bridgeton into a beautiful and peaceful Memorial Garden, following the practice's successful completion of the Bridgeton Urban Design Study and follow-up environmental improvement proposals.

Key features of Austin-Smith:Lord's design for rethinking the area as a usable, attractive and contemplative space for local residents include: opening up entrances to the park to provide an inviting green space and green link to the street network; introduction of bespoke lighting; replacing overgrown vegetation with new trees and shrubs; and providing a sensitive interpretation of the area's history through the use of sculptural columns. The design of the columns has been influenced by the site's use as a burial place in the 17th and 18th centuries as well the legacy of the weaving and dyeing industries which played such an important role in the social history of the area.

Siobhan Vernon, head of landscape architecture at Austin-Smith:Lord's Glasgow office said:

"We are delighted to see the opening of this landmark project in the redevelopment of Bridgeton. Extensive consultation with local residents and stakeholders was central to the project's success and we hope that the people of Bridgeton get as much enjoyment from using the park as we had designing it."

Austin-Smith:Lord has also been appointed by Clyde Gateway to develop proposals for improvements and interpretation for the nearby Calton Burial Ground on Abercromby Street. This follows on from the completion of a Conservation Management Plan for the space by Austin-Smith:Lord's Conservation team.
