Edinburgh: The Making and Remaking of a Capital City

Paperback (2005); Publisher: Edinburgh University Press; ISBN: 0748618686
Edinburgh: The Making and Remaking of a Capital City is a major new book about the architecture of Edinburgh.
The book's editors are Professor Brian Edwards of Edinburgh College of Art's architecture school, and Dr Paul Jenkins, of the school of the built environment at Heriot-Watt University. Academics, architects, conservationists and historians have contributed to Edinburgh: The Making and Remaking of a Capital City, which celebrates the successful building of Edinburgh.
They argue that Edinburgh has become more cosmopolitan and less Scottish. It has assumed some characteristics of a European capital. Dr Jenkins and Prof Edwards say sustainable development requires close relations between innovation, conservation and regeneration; Edinburgh has struck a better balance than Glasgow, which has periodically destroyed itself, St Andrews, which has become fossilised, or London, which has grown too big for effective sustainable urban management.
Lesley Hinds, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, maintains Edinburgh aspires to have the highest quality of city life in the UK and be the most successful and sustainable city in northern Europe.
