Scotland is a land with a truly fascinating history, and it’s famous worldwide for its ancient sites and historic buildings. While you might not be able to visit many of the country’s historical places in person right now, luckily we live in an age where you can take a virtual tour of them from the comfort of your own home.

From archaeological sites dating back thousands of years to awe-inspiring architecture, a visit is just a few clicks away.

Speaking of architecture, Edinburgh is famed for its historic buildings, but would you associate the Scottish capital with the art deco style?

Probably not, but it was adopted by many Scottish cities when it first emerged between the world wars. The style is characterised by bold geometric shapes, bright colours, and opulence (think The Great Gatsby). This made it a perfect choice for entertainment and leisure venues like hotels, restaurants, and luxurious apartment buildings.

The Art Deco Maybury Casino in Edinburgh, now known as The Grosvenor Casino, is a perfect example of how Scotland preserves its heritage and restores old buildings. The casino was built by the architects Patterson and Broom in 1935 for £25,000 and it was previously a roadhouse.

The roadhouse was a popular spot for dinner parties and live music, but by the late 1980’s, it was sadly rundown. It closed in 1987 and was renovated then reopened as a conference and banqueting centre. In 1997, Stakis Casinos saw the building’s potential and bought it, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Many of the original art deco statues and features have been kept so that visitors can see how the building would have looked in its heyday.

And whether you’re visiting to have a flutter or just to admire the wonderful building, you’ll be impressed. In fact, if you’re flying into Edinburgh, the casino is the one of the first buildings you’ll see as you head out on the road from the airport. You won’t miss it; the casino’s entrance tower was designed to resemble the radiator grille of a classic American car!

Scotland might not be top of your list when it comes to gambling destinations, but it’s steeped in history and you can enjoy a casino in unique and beautiful surroundings.

When you do get to visit The Grosvenor Casino in person, you’ll be met by friendly staff who’ll make your visit unforgettable, and you’ll have the choice of classic game offerings like American Roulette, blackjack and three-card poker. All the classic games in a classic setting! There’s also an extensive all-day menu, a great range of quality restaurant fayre, and of course, a drinks menu to quench your thirst after a hard day or night of gambling.

Sadly, in-person visits are off the table right now, but if we’ve convinced you to take a look, why not take a virtual tour of the casino? Whether you’re a lover of architecture or you like a flutter, you’re guaranteed to see something you like.
