Sandy Road Clinic – building information from Gareth Hoskins Architects: Aug 2005

“Located in the Partick area of Glasgow the new Community Centre for Health was commissioned by Greater Glasgow NHS Primary Care Trust, following a study by GHA in 2000. The design of the building aims to promote awareness of healthcare in the community, through a strong street presence and a high degree of openness. The street facade comprises of a zinc clad “box” above a fully glazed ground floor.

The hardness and scale of the zinc, and the window pattern responds to the neighbouring stone tenement buildings. The zinc “box” interlocks with an oak clad “box”, containing the treatment rooms, with oak louvres providing protection from solar gain to large, south facing windows. The building also houses a nursery, which opens onto its own south facing garden to the rear, shielded from the noise and pollution of the street.”

Sandy Road Clinic featured in an AJ building study, Nov 2004.

Roses Nomination
Gareth Hoskins Architects’ Community Centre for Health, Glasgow has been short-listed for the ‘Best Public Building’ award in The Roses Design Awards 2005. These awards recognise design excellence in projects outside of London. The other two short-listed projects are The Performance Academy Newcastle College by RMJM and The Sage Gateshead by Fosters and Partners.

This is the third award this year in which the Community Centre for Health building has been short-listed for, and has to date, received a Commendation for ‘Best Publicly Funded Building’ at the Scottish Design Awards 2005.

Designed for Greater Glasgow NHS Primary Care Trust, the building combines medical accommodation over three storeys with a separate Day Nursery at lower level opening out into secure garden play spaces. The building not only succeeds as a landmark building within the community but also in providing a functional and enjoyable environment for staff and visitors alike.

The Roses Design Awards 2005 winners will be announced on 13 Oct at the Roses Awards Presentation Dinner at the Palace Hotel, Manchester
