Issues to Consider If You Plan to Embrace the Self-Build Trend

There are many great developers out there making top-quality properties and buildings in Glasgow and beyond. However, while architects might be getting work from big firms, the chances are that they may also be receiving plenty of calls from individuals taking a more DIY approach.

The self-build trend has really come to the fore in recent years and now a new study has highlighted how many people in the UK have projects in mind.

Big Plans

In recent weeks, sites including Property Reporter have covered a new study published by Together, which has put a spotlight on the self-build aspirations of many Brits.

The specialist lender’s research found that around 34 per cent of people are prepared to take on a major self-build project in the future. Some respondents said that they hope to create a home for a family member, while others suggested they would live there themselves or simply sell it on.

It was also revealed that 26 per cent would be interested in adding a so-called ‘granny annexe’ to a property, with the space being suitable for when friends and family want to visit. Around 10 per cent added that they would rent out their self-build creation as a holiday let.

Construction Factors

The findings are fascinating, as they highlight the range of reasons as to why people would attempt a self-build project. However, there would be plenty of issues to consider, with the Property Reporter piece highlighting elements such as planning and tax matters. Factors specifically related to property construction may also come under the microscope. Whether you are building from scratch or adding new elements to an existing property, you will want to cover off all key bases.

With this in mind, it’s well worth asking yourself whether there isa possibility that you could go down the prefabricated route in some areas. For instance, Hydrodiseño, outlines why prefabricated bathrooms can offer some benefits. It explains how the modules include all the components of the bathroom, while finishes can be adapted to a project. The company added that the production process avoids the traditional issue of several trades having to work in small spaces.

Another matter you could consider when planning a self-build project is environmental issues. For example, could you look at adding solar panels to that brand new annexe? Ideal Home recently published a full guide to solar panels and it explains how the cost of such technology has dropped by around a quarter since 2014.

A Building Buzzword

There is always a lot going on in the property market and it is intriguing to see how many people are keen to create a dream home for themselves or others. ‘Self-build’ seems to have become a real buzzword in recent years, but there is a lot to think about when taking on such projects.

Fortunately, there are some innovative solutions out there that could provide a helping hand, while there may also be an opportunity to go greener during the process as well.
