Glasgow Shops Buildings

Shopping in Strathclyde – Stores in west Scotland, UK retail built environment updates

post updated 2 December 2023

We’ve selected what we feel are the key examples of Glasgow Retail Buildings, Strathclyde. We aim to include retail building design projects that are either of top quality or interesting, or ideally both.

We cover completed Glasgow shops, new store designs and shopping centres across Strathclyde. The focus is on contemporary retail buildings but information on traditional shops is also welcome.

Princes Square shops
Refurbished in the mid-eighties the six-floor Princes Square shopping centre is arranged around a decorative atrium set just off Buchanan Street on its east side not far from Central Station.
This Buchanan Street shopping centre was first designed and built in the 1840s by John Baird and other architects. The central Glasgow property was redeveloped in 1988 to a design by architects the Hugh Martin Partnership, from Edinburgh.

Interior fit-out of Shawlands ladies boutique : Butterfly Kisses shop
The clients were seeking a bespoke interior to create a unique shopping experience. The main feature of this store is a free form, floor-to-ceiling floating shelf that runs the full length of the shop. This dips and curves to form shelves at various heights and to frame the clothing on display. A bespoke butterfly table was crafted from handpicked douglas fir.
