Children in Castlemilk have cause for celebration on Thursday when they take part in the official opening ceremony of their new campus – St Bartholomew’s Primary and Machrie Nursery.

The new, state-of-the-art, £5.5 million campus is the amalgamation of the former St Bartholomew’s and St Julie’s primary schools, which closed in June 2004 and incorporates Machrie Nursery for the under 5s.

The school which started lessons in January this year, boasts modern and bright new facilities including two GP rooms, gymnasium, a high tech library and media suite, dining and assembly hall with up-to-date sound and lightening systems and an all weather synthetic pitch.

St Bartholomew’s has a capacity of 321 and a current school roll of 271. Machrie Nursery school can accommodate 50 children in the morning and 50 in the afternoon session.

Bailie Margaret McCafferty, Executive Member for Education Services who will perform the official opening ceremony said: “This is another great day for Castlemilk. The Council has invested hundreds of millions of pounds in our Pre-12 strategy and it is wonderful when we see these new schools completed and lots of pupils and teachers moved in.

“Our aim is to create teaching and learning environments across the city which give our youngsters the best possible chance to fulfil their potential.

“The secondary school stock in Castlemilk has already been replaced with Castlemilk High and St Margaret Mary’s Secondary, so it is only correct that primary pupils and nursery children are offered the same advantages of a modern, 21st century facility.”

Balfour Beattie Construction Ltd built St Bartholomew’s Primary and Machrie Nursery School. This is the second new pre-12 campus to open in Castlemilk. In 2004, the new Castleton Primary School and Arnwood Nursery opened on Dougrie Road.

In June this year another two campuses will open in Castlemilk – Miller Primary and Castlemilk Family Learning Centre and John Paul II Primary and Ardencraig Nursery School.

The new campus was built as part of the City Council’s Pre-12 Strategy, which has so far seen 23 new-build schools/school campuses either completed or currently under construction.

An additional 16 new build schools are currently in the pipeline under Phase 4 of the strategy. A further six schools have been comprehensively upgraded and refurbished.

The overall investment in Glasgow’s Pre-12 sector since the strategy was launched in 2003 now stands at more than £261million.
