Hotel in the Merchant City

Tall thin city block with dynamic roof expressed as curve over a Z-step – this device allows a step in parapet heights between neighbours, and creates a dynamic elevation for this boutique hotel. One of the early buildings by Elder & Cannon that made their name.

According to the architect this hotel “responds to the varied character of Brunswick Street as a contemporary infill with a strong identity which engages the existing buildings to complete a rich streetscape. A simple elevational break up begins a dialogue with the immediate context and clearly expresses the buildings function while an efficient central plan layout maximised the available footprint for hotel accommodation to both the street and the courtyard.”
