ellson | buchanan architects were approached in August 2011 and given a brief for a whole house refurbishment project and have since successfully transformed a traditional late-Victorian detached blonde sandstone villa to create a contemporary home for modern family living. As well as a sizeable stone faced extension forming a large open plan kitchen / dining area, the brief included creating a link to the existing garage to provide a home gym and study.

By demolishing an existing extension at the rear, original stone was reclaimed to form the outer leaf of the extension, creating a modern addition but retaining quality materials to suit that of the original building. A simple palette of quality materials such as stone, zinc and high performance glazing was selected. A close working relationship with the Structural Engineer, David Narro Associates, allowed the supporting columns to be positioned discretely within the timber kit and in between the clerestorey glazing so as not to disrupt the vistas through the open plan space. By retaining the large proportions and height of the original house throughout the extension a generous open plan space was formed with high level clerestorey glazing allowing additional natural light to flood the new space and allow an uninterrupted view to the garden.

A high level of specification was retained throughout the whole project with additional works including front and rear garden re-landscaping, new heating system with individual temperature controls and underfloor heating, replacement of existing sash and case windows, integrated media / AV systems and home cinema installations.

General refurbishment of traditional features also ensured this property was restored to the highest standard with re-instatement of cornicing and ceiling roses, roof and stone repairs, and full restoration of all internal woodwork. The project started on site August 2012 and was completed in February 2013.
