St Enoch Centre Glasgow Building News

Proposals to introduce a range of new leisure uses at the St Enoch Centre have been tabled by the owners. The plans by this international architects practice are designed to revitalise the faded development.

Plans include construction of a rooftop cinema and restaurant space and ground floor retail within the footprint of a former BHS store.

A first floor restaurant space is to be introduced plus a dedicated outside seating with a ‘cinema box’ above

New materials are to be introduced plus decorative interior light-reflecting devices.

Benoy state: “The proposed development delivers new retail and leisure uses by reconfiguring underutilised existing building space in the east end of St Enoch shopping centre. Additional space is generated by building on the roof space of the Debenhams bridge.”

Entrance canopies will be replaced and a series of public realm enhancements are also envisaged to improve pedestrian connections with Argyle Street through introduction of new seating, tree planting, signage totems and matt red painted setts.

Reiach and Hall were architects with GMW Partnership for this innovative shopping centre containing 75 unit shops, two major space users, a food court, ice rink, merchandising area and parking for 750 cars. The building uses a solar-passive approach which enables the enclosed volume to act as a buffer between the conditioned environment of the shops and the outside, while also providing an open and airy interior.

This large Glaswegian retail complex, known locally as the largest glass structure in Europe – but surely not as colossal as say Leipzig’s Hall by Von Gerkan + Marg with Ian Ritchie Architects – over 80 mostly high street stores such as Burton, Debenhams, Boots, BhS and Oasis.

St Enoch Centre has Scotland’s largest food court, with over 850 seats. The Centre is situated on the site of the former railway station from the south (before that a hotel) and commenced trading in May 1989. St. Enoch Square was created in 1783.

Background

St Enoch Hotel opened in 1879 and became the largest hotel in Glasgow. The St Enoch Hotel was built over the railway station entrance; it closed in 1974.

Glasgow & South Western Railway Company used St Enoch Station from 1876 until the early Seventies.

St Enoch Square dates from 1783 and is currently (2004) rather down at heel and includes a Metro station dating from 1896. This area, at the ‘bottom’ of Buchanan Street, between the Clyde [link] and Argyle Street, is due for renewal. See the adjacent Custom House Quay [link] site.

The St Enoch Shopping Centre was built on the site of the station and hotel in 1985. St Enoch Church on the south side of the square was demolished in 1925.
