Owner: Charan Gill MBE – crowned the ‘Curry King of Glasgow’.

Fespite the huge global success of the multi-award-winning Slumdog Millionaire movie, nobody actually owned the rights to the name “Slumdog” and so Charan Gill bought it for a small administration fee.

Sauchiehall Street Glasgow

Having sold the Harlequin Group of restaurants four years ago for a cool £8 million, Charan Gill’s re-entry into the Glasgow scene was always going to stir up interest. From getting hold of the Slumdog name to tapping into the energetic zeitgeist of contemporary, cosmopolitan India, Gill’s ambition and populist touch seem unquenchable, and it’s not hard to envisage this restaurant and street-front bar rocking with Christmas parties over the next month.

Slumdog is located in the old Sauchiehaugh bar not far from Charing Cross, and seats over 150. Its bare-brick walls, silk-backed chairs, antique carved doors and coloured pendant lights bringing a smart if studied Bollywood glamour.

The menu promises Mumbai street food and includes kati rolls, a toasted paratha stuffed with meat or vegetables, and bhel puri, a ball of puffed rice, lentils and potato. The menu also features more familiar Asian food like samosas, pakora, kebabs and tandoori curries, and even the Brtiish classic, fish and chips.

Charan’s big idea with Slumdog is the “Soiree” menu. You reserve a table for the night, order drinks, relax and let the staff bring you the sort of food that would be served in a traditional Indian home.
