Selfridges Glasgow Development

Selfridges Glasgow store plans ended Selfridge’s long-promised plans to build a 200,000sqft department store – with initial designs by world-famous Japanese architect Toyo Ito – on Glasgow’s Trongate have been ended with news that the retailer is in discussion with property firm Frogmore to sell off its land holding.

Selfridges had been holding onto the land and had hoped to turn the site into a £3m car park for the ‘medium term’, but these hopes were dashed when Glasgow City Council refused to grant approval. The company will now try to sell the plot for just £5m – well below the £15m it paid for the land back in 2007 just before the financial crisis.

Frogmore are considering a mixed-use scheme comprising flats, a four-star hotel and shopping units on the rundown three-acre block – if the deal is completed as expected over the next few weeks.

Toyo Ito plans for Selfridges Glasgow store, Scotland, reported to have been revised following Selfridges’ July 2003 takeover.

Toyo Ito Architects have not been able to release proposals for Glasgow Selfridges despite requests in 2003 & 2004: further details re the store proposal will be posted if received.

Selfridges Glasgow
Selfridges are reported to have had exclusive talks with the property developer Wilson Bowden in mid-2004 about resurrecting plans to build a large store in the Merchant City, Glasgow [merchant_city.htm].

Selfridges would still use the Trongate site purchased in late 2002. The Selfridges site was formerly home to the Goldberg store and the Clydesdale Bank: there is an opportunity for a 110 metre facade onto the Trongate.

Back in 2001 Selfridges announced its plans to build a £90m store in Glasgow, using Toyo Ito Architects, for opening in 2007, but appeared to abandon the concept of a Selfridges Scotland store in favour of existing outlets after being taken over by the Canadian billionaire Galen Weston in 2003. Around 200,000 sq ft of a larger site may be occupied by Selfridges. Frogmore and Pathfinder have both been involved in this retail initiative.

Toyo Ito & Associates to design Scottish Selfridges Shop

Upmarket department store group Selfridges is close to appointing a “signature architect”, possibly from overseas, to dream up a futuristic design for its £90m Glasgow store.

Selfridges chief executive has already appointed the Building Design Partnership, whose Glasgow office (BDP Glasgow) will help Toyo Ito in designing the Glasgow Selfridges store. A detailed planning application was due to be submitted in the middle of 2003, with planning permission expected by the end of 2003
