Glasgow City Council today backed plans to establish a new home for a vital city hospice next to Bellahouston Park.

Members agreed to make a site to the east of the public park available to the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

The land is currently used by the council as a depot and nursery, which is scheduled to close as part of a service reform programme. The hospice, which is rapidly outgrowing its current home at Carlton Place, has been searching for a suitable site since announcing plans to develop a new building earlier this year. In addition to enhancing existing adult services, the planned new, larger hospice will include a specialist service for young people for the first time.

Leader of Glasgow City Council, Cllr Gordon Matheson said: “The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice is an inspiring centre of excellence in the care of people of all ages who are facing life-limiting illnesses.

“Glasgow is rightly proud of this service and owes its staff and patients all the support, encouragement and friendship it can muster.

“As we reform council services and the way we work changes, there is a shift in what kind of property we need, where and even how we use it.

“I’m very aware that those operational changes will, sometimes, create opportunities for other interests in the city. Where they are good for Glasgow, as the Hospice undoubtedly is, we will do whatever we can to help.”

The depot site lies immediately north of Dumbreck Road and is currently surrounded by a brick wall, fencing and mature landscaping.

It has excellent links to the M8, M73 and the M74 and Dumbreck Road is a principal bus route.

As a functional depot, the site is not accessible to the public and has not been part of the public amenity of the park for approximately a century.

The council’s Executive Committee agreed in principle to support the relocation and instructed officers to begin work on a detailed report, to go before members in the New Year.
