GLASGOW INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS AND HOLMES ANNOUNCE NEW £500 ANNUAL AWARD FOR 3RD YEAR STUDENTS
The Holmes Award - 3rd Year Student Best Design 2009
The Holmes Award is a new annual £500 prize open to 3rd year students from the Strathclyde and Mackintosh schools of architecture. The award, supported by architects Holmes, has been introduced by the Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) as part of its commitment to strengthening the links between the two schools and professional practice.
The award will be presented to one student selected from the GIA Annual Student Awards 3rd year category winners from each school. The winner of the Holmes Award will receive a certificate and cheque for £500.
Martin McKay, GIA President said: "The GIA Student Awards are an important means of acknowledging the talent that continues to emerge from Glasgow's two schools of architecture. We are delighted to introduce the new Holmes Award which offers a new level of practice-focused peer recognition."
Holmes partner Sandy McMillan said: "Holmes is delighted to support the GIA Awards through the introduction of this new award and to reward the consistently excellent work of Part 3 students from the Mac and Strathclyde University. Our involvement is a reflection of the importance the practice continues to place on the nurturing and development of talented architecture students."
The 2009 GIA Student Awards will be presented in October. 22 May

Scottish Tours - Feedback
Our Architecture Tours are in full swing again with visitors in May from many countries with large groups from The Netherlands and Norway. The key recurrent theme again as in recent years is poor material weathering, followed by problems with overflows and finally lack of infrastructure. Staining is a major problem in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, whether it be from overflows - witness the rank brown staining on the backside of Rick Mather's Homes for the Future block - or lack of parapets - such as the Museum of Scotland north facade. White render was frequently stained on north-facing elevations leading various architects to question any usage in these situations even with good parapet detailing. Overflow staining would of course be avoided if continental approach to shared boilers and internal routing were adopted. Finally lack of infrastructure was yet again mentioned re Glasgow Harbour - good transport links, clinics, shops, nursery, etc.
The highlight this year appears to be Hazelwood School which has been praised for its good use of detailing, discreet forms and sensitive handling of function. [Adrian Welch] 19 May
