Building Design Architect of the Year Award

photograph : Andrew Lee
Gareth Hoskins Architects have been shortlisted for the Building Design 2008 Architect of the Year Award in the Public Buildings Architect of the Year category. The winners will be announced on 30th October 2008 at the Hilton Park Lane in London. The public buildings put forward by Gareth Hoskins Architects for the awards submission include the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Centre in Inverness, 'The Bridge' Arts Centre in Easterhouse, Glasgow, and the Royal Museum in Edinburgh.
The practice continues to go from strength to strength, following their recent success in winning the competition to design 'a Gathering Space', the Scottish presence at the 2008 Venice Biennale.
If you would like to see the work of Gareth Hoskins Architects, the Lighthouse Series of Architectural Monographs is to feature this notable architectural practice as the first in the series. The exhibition will run from 12th September 2008 until 2nd November 2008 at The Lighthouse, and will be accompanied by a book on the practice. 050908
Edinburgh World Heritage
Following the visit of UNESCO's director-general, Koïchiro Matsuura, to the capital debate has hotted up - he criticised Caltongate and Haymarket.
Richard Murphy (rightly) describes UNESCO as a “conservation mafia” and questioned Matsuura's statements re Caltongate. “I suspect that this whole Unesco relationship is a cosy little club” and of course our design champion Terry Farrell aired his views (27 Aug) on BBC Radio. Joanna Blythman has waded in with some traditionalist reaction. And bizarre calls have been made to halt developments until UNESCO has made a decision in the Spring - as if the credit crunch were not already damaging the city enough.
