£180m proposals for historic James Watt Dock area + Grade A-listed Sugar Warehouse. Scottish Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell officially launched the redevelopment that includes 700 luxury flats, 85 affordable new homes, 45,000 sqft of retail space and 145,000 sqft of commercial space. Reiach and Hall Architects' Beatson Institute Cancer Research Facility won the GIA Awards Supreme Award 2008 & 'Best Healthcare Building'.
Also, their Sir Alwyn Williams Building won the GIA 'Best Education Building' commendation and the Pier Arts Centre continued won the IAA 'Best New Building in the Highlands and Islands' 2008

Glasgow - World Heritage Site
RIAS secretary Neil Baxter says Glasgow deserves to be considered for World Heritage Status. He said: "Glasgow has a medieval history which is every bit as important as Edinburgh, Glasgow is an industrial site on a scale which way surpasses Edinburgh and Glasgow has world masters of architecture including Charles Rennie Mackintosh.Indeed, Glasgow is a fantastic Victorian city which has been described as the greatest Victorian city on the planet. 171108

World Heritage Status Red Herring
As predicted on this site, Edinburgh's WHS is not threatened (if it was lost UNESCO would lose its leverage, simple). Unesco delegates declared this weekend that the capital's status is safe: Edinburgh World Heritage Status

The Architecture in Scotland Annual ran a poll to identify Scotland's best new building of 2008. By a huge margin gm+ad's Hazelwood School for the sensory impaired picked up the honour. "It is in the delivery of public service, however that any such project must be measured and in this Hazelwood really excels". Gordon Young Editor, Prospect

'Imprisoned' : Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Debate
Dubbed 'crisis talks' by The Scotsman, a summit of council officials, development bodies and heritage groups is proposed to try to prevent major Edinburgh construction projects being derailed. Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Deputy chief executive Graham Birse warned Edinburgh faces being effectively "imprisoned" by its World Heritage Status unless a major schism between conservation groups in the capital and developers can be resolved.

Congratulations to Gareth Hoskins who won Prospect magazine's Power 100 vote. The practice has had a very successful 2008 with the Gathering Space in Venice and Culloden Visitor Centre being shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Awards. We hope Gareth's sophisticated St Andrew Square building will soon see the light of day.
