Housing Shortfall
Increase from existing 25,000 new houses per year to 35,000 demanded for Scotland. Communities & Sport Minister said the “current rate of new house building - almost 25,000 new houses last year - is simply inadequate. This is why we have proposed a national goal to increase new housing supply to 35,000 a year by the middle of the next decade”. It’s essential the majority of this supply is located in dense developments on brownfield land; the planning system also requires immediate root & branch reform: Scottish housing
RIBA Carbon Tracker
RIBA launch carbon emissions online forum for practices to track building emissions from design to operation. Eventually accreditation of practices committed to carbon management will be implemented. Proposals being developed for a RIBA ‘Carbon Conscious Practice’ scheme - RIBA CarbonBuzz - will recognise design performance, but will also require participating practices to publish annual project sheets on design & operational energy use. Data will inform benchmarking, policy & research, particularly in aligning design predictions with operational emissions. Practices involved at the launch stage include Aedas, BDP, dRMM, Hamilton Architects, HOK and make.
