GCC - City Development
"Councillor Steven Purcell, the Leader of Glasgow City Council, has announced an ambitious economic blueprint, which will build the foundations for a thriving, world-class city within the next decade.
Delivering the key-note address to the State of the City Economy Conference at the Radisson Hotel, Cllr Purcell insisted that Scotland's largest city must provide a 'step change' to build economic confidence and productivity which includes prosperity and opportunity for all of our citizens.
In a sign of the continuing strength of Glasgow, Cllr Purcell announced that investment had risen sharply in terms of construction projects, either agreed or underway. Last year, the figure for 2004-05 was £3.4 billion - in 2005-06 this had risen to a record £4.2 billion, representing a 22% increase in a single year. 231106

Lighthouse Head
Following the not-so-recent relieving departure of former Lighthouse director Stuart Macdonald we have Nick Barley from The List magazine taking over at the curiously titled ‘The Lighthouse, Scotland’s National Architecture and Design Centre’. We wish Nick all the best in transforming The Lighthouse into a body that works with all those who promote architecture in Scotland, including our two websites. We have done much to promote Scottish architecture with countless foreign tours and much international contact, not to mention a robust resource; yet the websites have never received a penny from the Scottish Executive as The Lighthouse is the sole beneficiary. This concentration of power and finance into one body based solely in one city (Glasgow) must stop. The concept put about by The Lighthouse for 'satellite architecture centres' has never materialised - why?
Nick will take over from acting director Julia Fenby in Jan 2007. Stuart McDonald left in May to become Head of Gray’s School of Art Aberdeen.
