Anyway, in a better spirit of goodwill, let gm+ad be the first (and maybe the only ) practice to publicly congratulate Gareth Hoskins and his team for making it to the shortlist for Glasgow's new transport museum. We wish them well and look forward to seeing their submission. Alan Dunlop UGC Reply I have visited the UGC cinema and found it unremarkable, it is like many of the current crop of glorified shoeboxes built around the world. Paul Johnstone's point about Ronaldo had me in pain from laughter, to compare a footballer to a piece of the urban fabric of one of europe' major cities must rank as a contender for Number One in the Hall of Fame of All Time Inane Remarks. Had Mr Johnstone ever entered the City Centre on a bus from the South Side he would have seen the devastating impact that this frozen block of diaorreah ( I refer to the nauseating colour scheme) has on the skyline. It does achieve something truly remarkable, in that it makes the St Andrew's House Tower on Sauchiehall Street appear sensitive by comparison. It also creates an abysmal micro-climate, due to the convergence of downdrafts from the two towers. It ruins the view along four streets, as well as the entire City Centre from the M8. That the planners permitted this crude concoction, speaks volumes as to the depths to which the City Council's design policy has sunk over the past 5 years! Any designer who defends this urban detritus is in need of the services of a guide dog for the blind! Crawford Fulton UGC Mail Following the recent press regarding the UGC Cinema in Renfrew Street In Glasgow i feel compelled explain a few things to Louise Urquhart of JM Architects who’s comment border on the ridicules. Yes the UGC Cinema is not the prettiest building in the world that I will agree. Yes its not a design icon but one thing it has in its favour is the fact that it is the best cinema in Scotland by a long way as anyone whos actually taken the time to go will tell you. Did they try to stop Ronaldo playing in the world cup just because he isn’t the “best looking” player in the world ? No that would be ridicules and so are the comments about knocking it down. I find Louise's comments to be dangerous especially considering that JM Architects brought you such design icon’s as the Glasgow Schools PPP Schools.
