Goodbye RFACS
A new and independent "champion" for good architecture and design
in Scotland was announced today.
Provisionally named Architecture
+ Design Scotland, the non-statutory advisory public body will not
only take over the design review role of the Royal Fine Art Commission
for Scotland, but will also have a wider role in the promotion and advocacy
of good design.
It will work with both the private and the public sectors, in support
of the Executive's policy on architecture.
Culture Minister Frank McAveety said: "We hope to get the new body
up and running by early 2005. As well as discharging the design review
function of its predecessor, it will develop close partnerships with other
organisations to promote and encourage better design through a range of
new activities.
"These will include providing design advice and training; organising
seminars and conferences; and producing guidance where relevant.
"We appreciate the work done over many years by the Royal Fine Art
Commission for Scotland, but the time has come for a change. Further details
of the new body will be confirmed after we have held detailed discussions
with the existing. Commissioners. Her Majesty the Queen has given her
consent to the proposed changes"

RIAS COUNCIL WELCOMES NEW DESIGN AGENCY
The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland warmly welcomes the
announcement on 1 October of the creation of "Architecture &
Design Scotland". This body, a transformation of The Royal Fine Art
Commission for Scotland, aims to champion architecture and design, and
forge positive partnerships with other national and local agencies. The
RIAS has promoted such a positive change for a number of years, particularly
since the launch of the Policy on Architecture in October 2001.
The RIAS looks forward to assisting in the transformation process over
the next 18 months, and working with the new Agency, building on the Incorporation's
current expertise and experience, in order to fulfil the aims of the Policy
on Architecture for the benefit of all.
