Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects picked up the top prize for architecture at the Scottish Design Awards on 30 May. The Architecture Grand Prix was awarded to their Radisson SAS Hotel on Argyle Street, Glasgow, it follows in quick succession, the 1st European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage, Europa Nostra Award given to the practice on May 9th for their restoration work on
Glasgow Central Station. Both projects are neighbors and Alan Dunlop considers the awards to be recognition not only of the practice but also of the uplifting of a once semi-derelict area of Glasgow. Dunlop will consider how you balance working with listed buildings of the utmost importance while encouraging radical new work gm+ad are the most controversial practice in Glasgow, with projects like the Radisson and Spectrum House receiving criticism as well as acclaim. "People seem to have strong opinions about our work and seem to either love or hate it. It forces them though, to have an opinion and that is exactly the way it should be. We are comfortable taking chances....we also build very, very well" says Dunlop.
