Glasgow Waterfront - Feedback
John Norquist, president of the Congress for New Urbanism, in Glasgow
for Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment's first Scottish public
event, said predominance of steel & glass structures along riverside
ran risk of becoming banal; suggesting a requirement for small cafes,
bars and retail outlets to reflect the people and the culture; critcising
the parking lots on the river's edge and the creation of a stand-alone
financial services district that becomes a ghost town at night

The Prince's Foundation and the Congress for New Urbanism special event
The Prince's Foundation are delighted to announce a public event, profiling
the work of the internationally recognized civic leader and urban champion
John Norquist, President of the Congress for the New Urbanism. He has
been described as Americas boldest practitioner of urban regeneration
and the ultimate urban evangelist (The Guardian, July 2004). In 2005,
at the invitation of the Deputy Prime Minister, Norquist addressed the
Sustainable Communities Summit in Manchester.
From 1988-2004 Norquist was the Mayor of Milwaukee. Under his leadership,
the city experienced a decline in poverty, saw a boom in the construction
of urban housing and became a leading centre of education and welfare
reform. He oversaw a revision of Milwaukees zoning code and reoriented
development around walkable streets and public amenities such as the city's
Riverwalk. He also drew widespread recognition for championing the removal
of a stretch of elevated freeway in the heart of Milwaukee, clearing the
way for large-scale redevelopment. John is the author of The Wealth of
Cities (Addison-Wesley, 1998) and teaches courses in urban planning and
development.
By taking a role as an urban design champion, Norquists time in
elected office has clear lessons for cities around the world which, like
Glasgow, are adapting to post-industrial futures. Norquist will be joined
in this evening debate on the importance of public realm by Hank Dittmar,
Chief Executive of The Prince's Foundation who brings his own insights
into the role of governance, particularly in the strategic planning of
our infrastructure.
