JKS Units Clydebank

Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects has won an international award for its JKS Workshops scheme in Clydebank, Scotland. The Glasgow-based practice was handed the award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Murray and Dunlop’s project was put forward for the award by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas, and was then judged by a panel of Russian judges.

The workshop project was completed in 2005 and provides single-storey industrial units for small businesses.

The practice said it was delighted by the news, even though it had been unaware it had been entered.

Alan Dunlop said: ‘It came as a complete but delightful surprise. To think that a low-key workshop project could win such a top award from Chicago and be put forward by Massimiliano Fuksas is uplifting and emphasises an approach we’ve always taken as a practice that there can be architecture in even the most basic of commissions.

‘It’s funny though that this small project should gain such international attention but great for us and for Clydebank to be mentioned on a world stage.’

Third time in five years for Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop.

The John Knox Street Warehouse project in Clydebank has been shortlisted for the £25,000 RIAS Andrew Doolan Prize for the best building in Scotland in 2006.

It is the third time in five years that a building by the architects, Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop, has been shortlisted. An achievement in itself and one no other practice in Scotland has managed.

The development for Clydebank Rebuilt Ltd, located off Glasgow Road in Clydebank, provides small industrial units suitable for start-up businesses, or existing small businesses to relocated to better premises. There are three modules, each containing 7 units varying in size from 500 to 2,000 sq feet, with service yard and car parking.
The single storey buildings are steel framed and finished externally with rainscreen cladding designed.

Two principal materials have been selected for the cladding, Eternit panels, which are pre-coated and screen printed with a “Singer” stitching pattern, and gold anodised aluminium panels, which make it unique and root the workshops to their setting. There are also areas of triple wall polycarbonate glazing with coloured feature lighting behind.

“The JKS Workshops project has already won a number of national and international architecture awards in 2006,” says Alan Dunlop, “including a RIBA Award, a Scottish Design Award and the Chairman’s Gold Award and Silver Medal at the Roses Design Awards. Amazing really for such a relatively low budget project. With the JKS Workshops, it’s the idea and the architecture that’s important and lifts it above the rest”

Gordon Murray adds, “in the first year of the £25,000 prize the Radisson SAS was shortlisted, last year our speculative office development Sentinel was only beaten by the Scottish parliament building, the symbol of a nation. This year, we have a small commercial project up against big public projects like Kelvingrove and Perth Concert Hall but we think it will do well”

“Indeed, we hope it’ll be third time lucky” says Alan Dunlop.

Clydebank Rebuilt Starter Units

16 Nov 2005

Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects have just completed these low cost starter units in Clydebank, Scotland.

The development for Clydebank Rebuilt Ltd is located at John Knox Street, off Glasgow Road. and provides small industrial units suitable for start-up businesses, or existing small businesses to relocated to better premises. There are three modules, each containing 7 units varying in size from 500 to 2,000 sq feet, with service yard and car parking.

The single storey buildings are steel framed and finished externally with wrap around rainscreen cladding designed to a higher specification than the usual speculative industrial development. This is because of the high profile location and should also attract a better mix of tenants.

Two principal materials have been selected for the cladding, Eternit panels, which are pre-coated and screen printed with a “Singer” stitching pattern, and gold anodised aluminium panels. There are also areas of triple wall polycarbonate glazing with coloured feature lighting behind. At night the buildings glow.

The Singer sewing factory was once a major employer in Clydebank, so the architects have looked to keep a link with the past, in the design of these new units.
