“To explore, experiment and evolve design is our common desire. To learn from and work with a diverse range of people is our approach. We encourage an atmosphere where all life experience is relevant, and where the everyday can be inspirational.”

On July 7 2007, initial building work began on the major £10 million redevelopment of The Hub at the University of Glasgow, due to be completed September 2008. Nomad have been appointed to work alongside Page/Park Architects in creating an innovative interior design solution that will reinforce Page/Park’s architectural redevelopment, and help to create a modern, technologically savvy and flexible ‘one stop shop’ of front line university services – injecting life back into this currently disused 1960s building, and bringing energy back into the heart of the campus.

Val Clugston, who co-founded Nomad in 2006 with Scott Mason, states –

“Fundamentally, interior design is about enriching both the environment and function of an existing or new building. We specialise in public sector projects that comprise a number of functions, always placing people at the heart of the design experience. And we will be able to use that exact philosophy in creating a fresh and efficient environment for both Glasgow University students and staff alike”

Once completed, The Hub will comprise of four distinct levels – with a GP practice and bookstore on level one; admissions, registry and careers offices on level two, leading to an outdoor piazza; the third level will house a modern cafÈ; and the fourth level will be given over to informal work and meeting zones for Hub staff. Throughout the building ribbon elements will create a fluid flow of mobility and information.

Nomad’s appointment will include supporting staff through the change of business procedure while enriching the brief though a participatory design process, full interior and graphic design, all navigational systems and, finally, the design of exterior audiovisual artwork.

Specialising in the public sector, Nomad’s clients include Learn Direct Scotland, University of Bradford, Dublin City University, Glasgow School of Art and Schools of Ambition. Nomad couple their natural intellectual curiosity with their ability to ‘play well with others’ in order to create public environments which are both aesthetically harmonious and thoroughly functional. Their work to date within the education sector has been extremely well received – creating environments that are highly conducive to increased learning.
