Sighthill Regeneration – Transformational Regeneration Area
Glasgow City Council has signed an agreement with Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and Keepmoat Homes to deliver more than 800 new homes at the Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area (TRA) in the city. Keepmoat will work with independent consultancy LDA Design to bring forward the new development.

27 August 2013 – Scotland mired in housing crisis say builders as completions fall by 25 per cent and starts slump to lowest on record
Responding to official statistics for the latest quarter showing that housing completions across all sectors fell by 25 per cent and that starts had slumped to their lowest figure on record, the trade body representing the Scottish home building industry said it was extremely disappointed but not surprised by the news.
Homes for Scotland Chief Executive Philip Hogg said:
“Today’s figures reinforce the fact that Scotland is mired in a housing crisis. Less than 14,000 new homes were built in 2012-13 yet our population is at a record level and households are growing by more than 21,000 a year.
“It is estimated that 465,000 new homes are needed in Scotland by 2035 to meet demand. However, the build rate announced today points to a shortfall of around 160,000 by this time. With this equal to the number of people currently already on housing waiting lists, such an outcome would have severe long-term social and economic consequences.
“Whilst the property market in England may appear to have turned a corner as a result of government policies, this is clearly not the case north of the border where much still needs to be done.
“In particular, we need to see the Scottish Government’s promised £120m shared equity scheme launched as soon as possible and proposals to increase regulation and cost which threaten to further depress housing supply be reconsidered.
“If such action is not forthcoming, the cautious optimism which was apparent in the first half of the year could easily disappear with investment channelled elsewhere.

GHA News
The Scotsman report that the board of Glasgow Housing Association is set to quit, after the Scottish Housing Regulator questioned the organisation’s management and its strategic direction and purpose. The SHR is conducting an audit of GHA, due to be completed at the end of June. GHA is Scotland’s largest housing association with 63,000 tenants and 26,000 factored homeowners. 13 Jun 2009

Tower Block Demolitions – News Update Dec 2008
Following demolitions in 2008 at Royston (1 block), Gorbals (2), Sighthill (2) Pollokshaws (2) & Millarston (3).
Of the 223 blocks remaining, around three quarters are multi-storey towers – 12 storeys and over. The Red Road flats are the highest at 31 storeys.
Glasgow Housing Association plans to demolish two more tower blocks – at Shawbridge Street and Sighthill – early next year with more to follow.
When GHA took over the housing stock from Glasgow City Council in 2003 it inherited 238 high-rise blocks comprising 22,467 flats.

The city is well known (in Scotland at least) for the Comprehensive Redevelopment Areas which decimated slums in the fifties and sixties, replacing them with brave new world tower blocks and slab blocks. Some examples above from just south of the Crown Street area (left) and from the Gorbals (right). Queen Elizabeth Square housing by Basil Spence was demolished and has now been replaced by a CZWG masterplan (led by Gordon Duffy now of Duffy & Batt).
