Flood damage

There has never been a time where your home insurance is more important.  Last summer 180,000 people made claims for flood damage over a period of two months, and it is estimated that more than five million people live or work in flood risk areas in England and Wales alone. By law if you have a mortgage you will already have buildings insurance, but are you getting the most out of it? Chances are you've probably had your policy for quite a while, but whether you've had your policy for a while or you are just about to buy a house the answer is the same- shop around.

There are so many policies out there, but the most important thing to do with each policy is check what you are actually covered for- you could be paying fantastically low premiums but then come seriously unstuck if something goes wrong and you have insufficient coverage. The best way to compare insurance policies is to use a price comparison website like moneysupermarket.com or moneyfacts.co.uk, where you can enter your specific details and also directly compare companies. You could also go directly to the websites of insurance suppliers. Another good tip to save money is to get buildings and contents insurance from the same company. Insurers often provide discounts for customers in such situations.  Legal and General offer up to 43% off combined home insurance when applying online.

If you are over fifty you may stand to get even cheaper insurance- people over 50 tend to be more careful than their younger counterparts and therefore less likely to make a claim. RIAS is a company with over 970,000 policy holders over the age of 50, and as a result are able to offer excellent insurance, with buildings cover up to £1 million, and contents cover up to £50,000. If you apply online for combined house insurance with RIAS you will receive a third off of the price of your contents insurance, and even if you just apply for a quote online you will receive a free £25 wine e-voucher.

Whatever you choose, make sure you are covered, as that rainy day could arrive quicker than you imagined.
