Make Sure You Are Covered

Many people's belts will have tightened considerably over the past few months, with cuts to budgets and the cancellation of payments that are not essential. One thing you cannot afford to be without at the moment, however, is home insurance.

If you have a mortgage, you will know already that it is the law to have buildings insurance for your home. Buildings insurance protects your home from things like damage by fire, storms, floods, subsidence and vandalism. But it does not protect your belongings contained inside your house. Contents insurance protects your valuables such as electronics and furniture from damage and theft. It can also protect you from the loss of personal belongings such as briefcases or cameras outside of the house. In these hard times it could be tempting to stop your policy- of course- if it’s not happened by now, why would it? You may think you are saving money by not having contents insurance now, but if the unthinkable did happen along the line, you could be left seriously out of pocket. Of course there are ways to ensure you can save money on your insurance without having to get rid of it entirely.

Always shop around- buying buildings and contents insurance together can save you money as companies often offer discounts to guarantee your business. You could also save money by arranging your cover online. Legal & General have a good site, and are offering up to 43% off of their standard plan for combined buildings and contents insurance if you apply online (other terms and conditions apply). Legal & General are one of the largest investors in the UK stock exchange, and own around 4.5% of the FTSE 100 share index, so are a very safe pair of hands.

If you are over 50 it might be worth looking at RIAS- they specialise in home insurance for this age group. They have over 970,000 customers, which enable them to negotiate better deals with insurers.  If you combine buildings and contents insurance you will receive a third off of the price of contents insurance, and if you apply for a quote online you will also receive a free £25 wine e-voucher.
