Glasgow Doors Open Days Launch

29th of August 2016 – The programme for this year’s Doors Open Days will be launched on Tuesday 30th August, 2-3.30pm at Greyfriars Garden and the Civic Room, Glasgow. In September, tens of thousands of people will have the opportunity to visit buildings and sites for free across every one of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas. A brand new website at www.doorsopendays.org.uk, designed for ease of use across PCs, tablets and mobile devices, will also be launched. The site is packed with information about hundreds of buildings that are either not normally open to the public or charge to enter.

Doors Open Days 2016

Highlights this year include Dundee Dental Hospital; Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom, Selkirk ; Greenock Waterfront Cinema; the Private Telephone Museum, Darvel; and Cromarty Lighthouse.

John Pelan, Director of Scottish Civic Trust said: “Everyone is very excited about seeing which buildings are open this September. 2016 is the 27th year we have been co-ordinating the national Doors Open Days programme and it would not be possible without the work of the many, many volunteers and co-ordinators who create and deliver the programmes in their areas.

The new website looks fantastic and we are extremely grateful to Historic Scotland for their support. Thank you also to the Festival of Architecture 2016 team for their support for this year’s programme which has allowed us to meet our target of having at least one building open in every one of Scotland’s thirty-two local authorities areas. So far, almost 1000 buildings will be open!”

Martin Fairley, Head of Grants at Historic Environment Scotland, said: “We were pleased to support the development of the new Doors Open Days website, which will make it easier for people to find hidden sites of historic interest in their area. Pulling together information on the hundreds of events across Scotland and presenting them in an accessible way is quite a challenge, but one the new website has risen to. I hope the new site and more accessible programme of events will encourage people to seek out some of the unique opportunities afforded by Doors Open Days this September, and help them uncover some of the less well known aspects of their local history.”

St Andrew’s in the Square Formerly the church of St Andrew’s in the Square in Glasgow’s East End, and last used as such in 1990, this building dates from 1754 and is widely regarded as one of the finest classical churches in Britain. It was designed by the architect Allan Dreghorn, based on James Gibbs’ famous St Martins-in-the-Fields in London and built by the master mason, Mungo Naismith. It was the city’s first new church to be built since the Reformation. Today, the building is a performance venue.
