The remaining 76,000 tickets go on sale to the general public on Tuesday. They cover limited sessions and price categories in badminton, boxing, lawn bowls, rugby sevens, weightlifting and para-sport powerlifting and squash. During the initial four-week window, there were 2.3 million requests for one million tickets then available. Since then, applicants who were unlucky in the first ballot were given first refusal in the second round of tickets to go on sale, then all applicants could apply for more.

Commonwealth Games 2014 Glasgow Visit

CGF delighted with Glasgow 2014 Progress

The Co-ordination Commission (CoCom) of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) today concluded its second inspection visit to Glasgow, the host city of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The four member panel, chaired by Bruce Robertson, CGF Vice-President, has spent two days meeting with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee and representatives from a range of Games’ partners.

Speaking at a media conference at the headquarters of the Organising Committee, Mr Robertson praised the progress made by the games organisers and partners since the first CoCom visit in October 2011. Much of this progress is a natural part of the ‘gearing up’ process as the organisers enter into the detailed operational planning phase now we are just 28 months away from the start of the Games.

Particular milestones singled out by Mr Robertson included:
• The opening of two refurbished venues: Royal Commonwealth Pool and Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls, and the good progress being made on construction of all other venues and in particular the Commonwealth Arena ; all the infrastructure projects are progressing well and are on track for completion and operation well ahead of the Games.
• The Organising Committee’s responsible approach to managing public funding. They have created a culture of strong budget control and are on target to deliver the Games within the approved £524 million budget.
• The welcome addition of 60 staff by Glasgow 2014 since the CoCom’s last visit as the Organising Committee builds headcount and capacity in the build-up to delivering the Games.
• The commencement of detailed work on the Model Venue Exercise; the template which will guide the planning of all the venues to be used during the games. This will define the temporary designs of the venues and overlay requirements.

Audit Scotland: Glasgow 2014’s plans for the Games are on track and on budget

Glasgow 2014’s Organising Committee and Games Partners today welcomed an assessment from the independent public spending watchdog that planning for the XX Commonwealth Games is on track and on budget.

Audit Scotland’s Glasgow 2014 Progress Report 2, which is published today (Thursday, March 22), says planning for the Games is on track, infrastructure projects are forecast to be on time and organisers (Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, Commonwealth Games Scotland and Glasgow 2014 Ltd) are committed to delivering the Games to the required standards and within the approved budget.

Commenting on the report on behalf of Games Partners, a spokesperson for the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee said:

“We welcome Audit Scotland’s assessment that progress in planning for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is on track and, together with our Partners Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and Commonwealth Games Scotland, we are committed to delivering the Games to the required standard within the £524million budget.

“We are pleased the Progress Report also recognises that, with 70% of infrastructure already in place, the risks around delivering Glasgow 2014 are less than for other Games.

Broadway Malyan’s team, of Arup, Drivers Jonas and regeneration company New City Vision, is still to appoint a contractor to bid with, while the Gladedale Consortium, with Bellway Homes and Citta Property Group, the Australian developer which built the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, is in discussions with three architects to join its team.

The four consortiums were officially ratified by Glasgow City Council and will now enter into a competitive dialogue process with them. Two consortiums will be shortlisted by the end of 2008, with a successful team chosen by summer 2009.

The winning bidder will build up to 1,500 homes in the east end of Glasgow. These will house 8,000 athletes during the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and provide a mixture of private and affordable homes after the Commonwealth Games end.
